The Rake and the Recluse for $5.99
Okay… so I came across this…
Which my first thought was… Hello Captain Tight Buns.
FREEDOM : The Rake and the Recluse : Part One (a time travel romance) (The Rake And The Recluse : A serial novel) by Jenn Leblanc. Hey…its Free on Amazon. (.99 on BN.com)
So, it looked interesting. And it was a Serial Novel. And I’m cheap (money goes to Day School and diapers after all)… so I started poking around.
1. This is a six part serial novel.
2. the rest of the parts cost 99 cents or $1.99 (yes, Amazon has a couple at 99 cents, and the rest from BN are $1.99)
3. This is a rewritten/expanded previously released book.
Now, yes… It has been getting some decide reviews… which, you know me, all about the good read (at a good price.)
So… this is what I suggest.
1. Get the Free Part One. (see link above) Yes, Nookers, get the Free one from Amazon. Download the Free Kindle App to your computer, and get an Amazon account.
2. If you decide you like Part One. Get the whole sha-bang… The Rake and the Recluse REDUX (containing all six parts)
For Kindlers from Amazon for $5.99
For Nookers from Barnes and Noble for $5.99
A little bit more…
A woman out of time.
A man stifled by propriety.
A nemesis determined to take her away.
A brother to the rescue.
How will a powerful Duke deal with a woman who doesn’t know her place? How will a woman used to the 21st century survive in time where she is considered property?
Francine Larrabee woke up on the wrong side of the century. She was fairly certain she went to sleep in her own comfy bed, but she doesn’t quite seem to be there now. Only adding to her problems is that she has no voice, is constantly being glowered at by a large, stunning man who is obsessed with propriety, and she is apparently betrothed to another horrid little man, determined to ruin her, and any other girls that get in his way.
How does she find herself in the past, when she couldn’t even find herself in her present? How does a self sufficient businesswoman survive in a time when women were still considered property for the whole of their lives and what is she going to do with this man who draws her to him so fiercely.
Wish lists…
We all have wish lists… right? Books you wish would come out?
For years, a sequel to The Eight by Katherine Neville was on my wish list. Suffice it to say, The Fire wasn’t what I hoped it would be. Mostly, I believe, in a change of reader expectations of books.
Also, I had the truth behind Michael Durant’s survival from My Fair Temptress by Christina Dodd. She made us wait 4 1/2 years before letting us know what happened to him with In Bed with a Duke. She pulled the same thing with Gabriel Prescott from the Lost Texas Hearts series, making us wait for four years when she rounded out the Fortune Hunters series with Danger in a Red Dress. She has made us wait, again, with Aleksandr Wilder’s story. Am I as I was with the others? No. Mostly cause Aleksandr needed to grow up in my head, and well, when she started the Chosen One series – I knew it was coming, even if it was delayed for a year.
If you are a reader of Susan Wiggs’ The Lakeshore Chronicles… Then you might have been one of the ones dying for Daisy’s story – Marrying Daisy Bellamy, which came out last year. Now, I just want the next one (due out in the fall – Sonnet’s story).
So, what is on my list now?
My biggest “I want it now” is the next installment of Eileen Dreyer’s Drake’s Rakes series. I’m a fan of Barbara Schroeder, the spymaster and her collection domestic (as in servants) spies. Eileen left Babs story hanging a little in Always a Temptress. The ONLY thing keeping me from being more annoying about it – A web short out this summer and the promise (ie she has been contracted) for the next Drake’s Rakes trilogy.
I have a “o happy day” with the announcement late last month that Julie Kenner is going to dive into self-publishing to continue her recently orphaned Kate Conner, Demon Hunting Soccor Mom series. Pax Demonica will be out later this spring. The last book – Demon Ex Machina – came out in 2009, long enough ago that I feel like I need to read it again to remember where it left off.
I do read a little YA… so Tera Lynn Childs is on my list. Namely a certain character named Nicole from her Oh. My. Gods. series. Happily to her fans, Tera announced a Nicole short to be out next week, and a novella to come later. Cause well, Nicole has been a mystery that many fans want the answers to! Of course I’m also happily waiting on Tera’s next Mermaid (Just for Fins) book and Medusa Sisters (Sweet Shadows) book, which are due out this year.
With e-publishing/self-publishing become more accessible, it might mean that orphaned stories might find there ways to readers. If the authors have the time and know how, maybe readers can see a return to characters they have been clamoring for. Think about Connie Brockway breaking from her old publisher, teaming with Amazon, and now writing the stories and settings she wants to write. This brings hope to those authors that have a book that has no home.
Do you have a wish list?
For the Jane Austen enthusiasts
I still haven’t read Jane Austen! (Maybe I need to make my reading resolutions for the year…) But if you like the idea of spin-off novels from her classics… here are a few to look at.

Everything! Eleanor agrees to travel back in time to prevent a deadly duel, but she doesn’t know how to behave, what to say, and most importantly…

The captivating, infuriating, and mysterious Lord Shermont is a renowned rake and womanizer—but is he also a dangerous cutthroat and spy? Eleanor has to get up close and personal to find out…
Otherwise, she could fall into a most shocking scandal…

From the author of Hundreds of Years to Reform a Rake, a new time travel romance featuring a modern day career woman swept back in time to Regency England, where she thwarts a Napoleonic spy, chats with Jane Austen, and falls in love with a notorious rake.
Emma and the Vampires by Wayne Josephson
Kindle Price: $3.51
Nook: $10.19
What better place than pale England to hide a secret society of gentlemen vampires?
In this hilarious retelling of Jane Austen’s Emma, screenwriter Wayne Josephson casts Mr. Knightley as one of the most handsome and noble of the gentlemen village vampires. Blithely unaware of their presence, Emma, who imagines she has a special gift for matchmaking, attempts to arrange the affairs of her social circle with delightfully disastrous results. But when her dear friend Harriet Smith declares her love for Mr. Knightley, Emma realizes she’s the one who wants to stay up all night with him. Fortunately, Mr. Knightley has been hiding a secret deep within his unbeating heart-his (literal) undying love for her… A brilliant mash-up of Jane Austen and the undead.
Pemberley Ranch by Jack Caldwell
Kindle Price: $1.99

Handsome, haughty Will Darcy, a Confederate officer back from the war, owns half the land around Rosings, and his even haughtier cousin, Cate Burroughs, owns the other half.
In a town as small as Rosings, Beth and Will inevitably cross paths. But as Will becomes enchanted with the fiery Yankee, Beth won’t allow herself to warm to the man who represents the one thing she hates most: the army that killed her only brother.
But when carpetbagger George Whitehead arrives in Rosings, all that Beth thought to be true is turned on its head, and the only man who can save her home is the one she swore she’d never trust…

Fitzwilliam Darcy, Rock Star by Heather Lynn Rigaud
Kindle Price: $1.99
Nook: $9.89
Darcy’s as hot as he is talented…
Fast music, powerful beats, and wild reputations-on and off stage-have made virtuoso guitarist Fitzwilliam Darcy’s band into rock’s newest bad boys. Now Darcy and bandmates Charles Bingley and Richard Fitzwilliam are about to meet their match…
But she’s about to rock his world…

Elizabeth is sure she’s seen the worst the music industry has to offer. But as the days and nights heat up, it becomes clear that everyone is in for a summer to remember.
Shouldn’t the new year be a fresh start?
For me, some reason, the new year just isn’t a fresh start!
The same pile of stuff to do is still there from December, and not just my to be read pile. Coming into work this morning, I ticked off the things that I needed to get done today in my head. The same list of things I needed to get done the day before my holiday vacation a week and a half ago.
I did get a couple… and I mean TWO books read over my short holiday. I wish I had read more!
Eileen Dreyer’s Always a Temptress – which I was overjoyed in finally getting around to reading it.
Eileen is a seasoned vet in romance – but this is only her third venture into Historical. She thoroughly shows her talent and versatility with the Drake’s Rakes series, and Always a Temptress was wonderful.
I am so happy to hear that there will be at least two more trilogies for Drake’s Rakes (Always a Temptress rounded out the Three Graces Trilogy). Rumor has it there will be a short story in the spring as well. Meanwhile, I’m trying to find out when the next book is coming. I feel like a little kid on a sugar high wanting more!
His greatest battle is just beginning . . .
Captain Harry Lidge has done his duty. After losing too many good men on the battlefield, he’s ready to put his responsibilities behind him and live a life free of care. But first he has one last mission: find out what the most outrageous woman in London, the same woman who betrayed him nearly a decade earlier, is concealing, before her secrets take down the crown.
Her heart is the only thing she won’t risk . . .
Surrounded by ardent admirers and a few loyal friends, Lady Kate Seaton glides through the ton on a confection of couture gowns and bon mots. No one suspects that beneath her lighthearted façade Kate hides a sorrow so scandalous she’ll do anything to keep it hidden. But only when she trusts Harry with the truth and only when he trusts her with his heart can they stop the villains all too willing to kill Kate to attain their ultimate goal: destroy England
The other book I read was Because of You by new comer Jessica Scott.
I don’t normally read military romance – although… I guess I do – just not contemporary ones. But can you deny that cover?
I did enjoy it. A great addition to the Loveswept reboot/restart/comeback. I really enjoyed the secondary characters, and I’m waiting to see what happens in the next book coming in May – Back to You.
From the war-torn streets of Baghdad to the bittersweet comforts of the home front, two wounded hearts navigate the battlefield of coming home from war in this explosive eBook original from newcomer Jessica Scott.
Keeping his men alive is all that matters to Sergeant First Class Shane Garrison. But meeting Jen St. James the night before his latest deployment makes Shane wonder if there’s more to life than war. He leaves for Iraq remembering a single kiss with a woman he’ll never see again- until a near fatal attack lands him back at home and in her care. Jen has survived her own brush with death and endured its scars. And yet there’s a fire in Shane that makes Jen forget all about her past. He may be her patient, but when this warrior looks her in the eyes, she feels – for the first time in a long time – like a woman. Shane is too proud to ask for help, but for Jen, caring for him is more than a duty -it’s a need. And as Jen guides Shane through the fires of healing, she finds something she never expected – her deepest desire.

But when she flirts with a handsome stranger who turns out to be the earl’s brother Fitz, Eve worries she’s given the wrong impression. Trying to prove herself responsible—with Fitz challenging her at every turn—is hard enough, but a blackmailer with an interest in Eve’s prior marriage proves far more troubling. When the Heavens Fall: A Winslow Breed Novel by Gilbert Morris
THE SECOND NOVEL IN THE WINSLOW BREED SERIES—THE PREQUEL TO THE FAMED HOUSE OF WINSLOW BREED SERIES!
Brandon Winslow would rather gamble and frequent taverns than attend church. So how does he find himself at the forefront of the resistance to Bloody Mary’s attempt to eliminate—at sword’s point, if need be—the Protestant faith?
During the reign of Mary I of England—”Bloody Mary”—young Brandon Winslow (son of Stuart, protagonist of Honor in the Dust, the first book in the Winslow Breed series) finds himself in dire straits. After being flogged and then drummed out of the military for seducing the wife of his commanding officer, he sinks into a life of gambling and petty fraud along with Lupa, the fair gypsy woman who nursed him back to health.
After Mary weds Prince Philip of Spain, she begins to work in earnest to establish Catholicism as the only faith in England—and to execute Protestants. When Brandon sees several people burned at the stake in London for their faith, the experience changes him: Even though he has been only a nominal member of the Church of England, he finds himself compelled to stop those responsible for these outrages—and to do so before his uncle Quentin, a pastor, is himself burned at the stake. Unfortunately, the only way to save Quentin and so many others is to make Princess Elizabeth (who is herself in danger of dying at Mary’s hand) queen. And that, of course, would be treason. Punishable by death.
But then, Brandon has always been a gambler . . .

Since there were so many books this week… I have to do a distracting cover… I nominate Sex and the Single Earl. Why? This cover has been distracting me on blogs for weeks now. Yes, Katie MacAlister and Shanon K. Butcher have sexy men covers, as does Brenda Jackson’s Blaze. I’m a sucker for historicals… and sharp-partially-dressed men.
